__'It’s an impressive full-on sound, but it
doesn’t drown the bell-like clarity of Cahill’s inch-perfect guitar,
much less Hayes’s soaring fiddle.....At the end of the session the conductor sweeps his hand
around to indicate the soloists, and the orchestra erupts into
spontaneous applause. Contemporary. Classical. QED.' - Arminta Wallace, The Irish Times

Programme Note
_
‘Music for the Departed’ was originally composed as a trio in 2006 for Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill to perform with the classical violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan at the Masters of Tradition Festival in Bantry.
This version is an arrangement for fiddle, violin, guitar and strings.
The piece is a description in music of the grieving process, dedicated to the memories of my mother Joan Jennings and my aunt Catherine Flynn, both of whom died long before their time.
There are seven connected movements. Each one is based on a new tune I composed to echo the seven stages of the grieving process. Grief, Shock, Anger, Tears, Nostalgia, Determination and Celebration. Just like the grieving process, this piece involves a long difficult journey, yet it ends in joyous celebration of the lives of the deceased.
This version of Music for the Departed was premiered by Martin Hayes (fiddle), Dennis Cahill (guitar), Brona Cahill (violin) and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by David Brophy in the National Concert Hall, Dublin on 24th November 2010.
It was subsequently performed 5 times by Martin, Dennis and the Irish Chamber Orchestra with Katherine Hunka (violin/director) on a tour of Ireland in September 2011.
This version for string orchestra was jointly commissioned by RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Irish Chamber Orchestra and completed with the aid of bursary funding from the Arts Council of Ireland.
