Dave Flynn - Short General Bio
_Dave Flynn is an award-winning Irish composer and musician.
His music has been performed by internationally acclaimed artists including
Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Prague Chamber
Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Contempo and Smith Quartets and the
Dublin Guitar Quartet of whom Dave was a founding member.
He has received commissions from RTÉ, Music for Galway, Temple Bar Cultural Trust and West Cork Music with performances at festivals including the New York Summergarden Series; Prague Premieres; The Secret Festival, Sweden; the Masters of Tradition Festival and the EBU Folk Festival. His music has been published by Mel Bay Publications and Reed Music.
In 2009 the renowned new music advocate John Schaefer dedicated an edition of his ‘New Sounds’ radio show on New York’s WNYC to Dave’s music. The same year Dave’s piece ‘Music for the Departed’ received three sold out performances at the Irish Arts Center in New York.
In November 2010 Martin Hayes and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra premiered Dave’s fiddle concerto ‘Aontacht’ to a rapturous reception from the capacity audience at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
Dave holds a PhD from the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin for his research dissertation ‘Traditional Irish Music: A Path to New Music’ and a Masters Degree in composition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where he studied with Malcolm Singer. He obtained his undergraduate degree in composition at the DIT Conservatory.
His work and studies have been grant funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Culture Ireland, Galway County Council, the Bliss Trust, the Guildhall Trust and the Michael Collins Memorial Foundation. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival Composers Award and the 2002 IMRO Composition Award.
Dave is active as a multi-genre performer, specialising on the guitar and mandolin. He recently released his second album ‘Contemporary Traditional Irish Guitar’ to critical acclaim. He has toured internationally. Originally from Dublin, Dave currently lives in the West of Ireland.
